SCREAM
One of the things I do is install security programs. The designated computer is supposed to have no access to the internet and be used only for the security program.
I even make custom flip charts on how to backup & how to restore the data. I tell them several times that the program will not work if the drive is ghosted, cloned, or put into another computer. This is
security software.
It's intended to get all screwed up if someone takes a copy of your hard drive and puts it in another computer to learn how to bypass security at your facility.
Two to three times a year I'm sent all over Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, and sometimes up to north west New York to rebuild a computer/security installation because one of two things have happened - 1) The IT dept ghosted/cloned a hard drive for a new computer, or 2) the IT department gave them a new system as an easier way to deal with a virus! The other cloned programs will work, ours will not. We, usually, get a call (days or weeks later) when they go to add/remove someone from the system.
"Yes sir, where is the old computer?" "You/They did what!
If I can get your system up even once to do a backup, I can set it up in a new computer with all your data intact. The worst cases have been hard drives going bad followed by viruses. And the worst virus took about 4 hours to remove.
Change that! The worst case is usually the IT department giving you a new computer, and then either scraping it or wiping the hard drive to get rid of a virus so they can give it to someone else.
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is very good. Use the free version to clean the infected computer. Turn off "system Restore", restart in "Safe Mode" with network connections, download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and run it in safe mode. That'll take care of a lot of problems.
I personally use
Avast (
free version).
The worst security system rebuild I was involved in had me and another guy on site for 2 1/2 weeks.
EDIT - Avast will stop the virus download and warn you when you click onto a bad web page even in Internet Explorer.
