You can't rely on the serial, cause the nooks are build by different suppliers. I own to nooks, both delivered the same day, one with black inner case, one with grey inner case, both units with completely different serials.
If there's a firmware 1.4.1 or above on the unit: don't use the easy softrooting method. Currently this newer firmware isn't supplied to nooks with the old hardware, perhaps it isn't even compatible with the older nooks. Refurbished units with the old hardware are still shipped with 1.4.
