I guess even for the non-lighted cover, a defective hinge can cause electrical problems. Thanks to everyone for help figuring this out.
It would've been nice if Amazon customer service knew that the hinge could cause this problem. Frustrating that I had to discover it by researching on my own and getting help from folks here...
