isn't illegal with paper books and physical CDs. The problem with digital media is that one "lends" the friend a copy while retaining the original. Perhaps the answer to that would be a DRM mechanism which permits the copy of the book to be read on the unlicenced device, but auto-expires after 24h, or something like that?
