1.4.1 and above contains drivers required for the new hardware. Nothing more. If a nook ships with 1.4.1 or above, it is not compatible to older firmware versions and therefore the easy softrooting method isn't an option. If a nook runs 1.4, it's a model with the original (better, more expensive) hardware and it's compatible with the stock 1.0 firmware and therefore it's possible to use the easy softrooting method. At the moment, the serial number is absolutely irrelevant (changes when 1.5 is installed...).
