I've seen this too--seems that Gmail puts the email in the "Sent Mail" folder before it tries to send it on to its destination. Hmmm...perhaps it's the Amazon mail server that's sporadically terminating connections and not Gmail at all (as I speculated in my previous post). If Amazon dumps the connection before message transmission is complete, that would cause Gmail to report failure even though the message is sitting in the Sent Mail folder.
