I do have a nice navigation system in my car (a TomTom 920) with full coverage of Europe, but I also have this very nice paper book with all the maps as well!
I have a Tom Tom too, but it works best if you know roughly where you are going. It's a bit like a calculator in that respect - most of the time it's OK but you need to be able to tell when something has gone horribly wrong.
