I can't have conversations going on near me when I am reading. As someone else mentioned they people watch, my ear has the nack of listening for keywords that activate my attention away from my book.

Sadly I am hyper-aware of my environment and cannot get sucked into my reading in a public place. I have to have it void of conversation around me. I can however take mild noise and have no problems; except for repeative such as car alarms and back-up warnings. I got used to the noise from being in NYC for several years.
