You may be right, but the official story from B&N is that they had a large shipment of damaged cases and these are repaired, hence refurbs. As many are showing up with older serial numbers it makes sense. I thought people were seeing newer models as well, but the firmware is really weird in that the much older hard ware is showing up with firmware that should only work on the units made after the SD chip change.
We need someone with insight into these firmware changes to set us straight, especially after the 1.5.0 version comes out or it will be impossible to identify who has softrootable (easy way) hardware.
