Aspen, it sounds like you've gotten off on the wrong foot.
Kobo sells books in two formats which ought to be seamless to the end user.
1.They offer ebooks loaded directly from their store (or desktop app) whch talks directly to their readers or their Android / Blackberry / iPhone apps. This is their own format and talks to their software.
2. They also let you download the Adobe DRM (ADE) ePub edition. It's a different copy of the same thing. You might want that as a back-up.
Using your Velocity Cruz, you ought to be using the Kobo Android App to access your account and the Kobo bookstore. You ought to be able to buy the book that way and read it in that app. You don't need the ADE ePub for that.
If you also want an ePub copy, you'll need to install ADE on the device in question, authorize it on the account, and use ADE as the reader. But there is NO need to do that is the Kobo app works for you.
