Is there any chance that any of these will be any better?

Any advice for someone looking for public domain books that look good on the Kindle?

I know there are lots of places to download them. I'm looking for places other than mobileread where I'll have a better than average chance of getting a version that looks good on the Kindle.
I think the other posts are fantastic, and should be option 1 with public domain books, with Amazon you could download a free sample of the books in question. Presumably the content they provide in their samples would be enough to judge whether the books meet your criteria.

I only add the suggestion as it could be useful for books that are not in the public domain but are still available in multiple editions.
