Yes, the helpful/unhelpful button system is abused. There are reviewers who have followings of their own, and are trying to attain Top 100 ranking because then the publishers will send them free books. They encourage their own followers to click "helpful" buttons on their reviews--whether or not they intend to purchase the book in question. In that way, useless reviews by people who cannot understand the book get highly ranked.

I rarely review at Amazon anymore. The system is very much broken.
