It depends. I had to trim the screws and one I did a better job of cleaning the cut. It's not harming the plastic socket at all. The thumbscrew didn't get cleaned as well and there are some light scratches where the rough edges are cutting in. A stock screw should be fine, but if you're still worried, use a nylon screw. Keep in mind nylon doesn't like to stick to most things so plan on having to glue metal nuts on both ends to hold the screws.
