I give karma to karma-worthy posts. A karma-worthy post in my opinion is either a good point, something that makes me laugh or smile, someone who is coming to my defense, a person who is a good debater (whether I agree with them or not), or a helpful post (either to me or to the community). I will also sometimes give karma to newbies to make them feel welcome and to encourage them to continue posting.
