My Kobo died yesterday overnight, showing a similar problem. It sat on the floor beside my bed, powered off; when I pushed the power button in the morning, i ended up with a whole lot of dark and light stripes criss-crossing the screen (sort of a pretty plaid pattern, kind of like a tartan), with the "bo" from "kobo" still showing. Resets etc. didn't do anything, it was frozen solid in tartan; so I took it back to the store and exchanged it.
The only thing I can figure that might have done this is that I had a heating pad sitting close to the kobo; the heating pad was off for most of the night, but plugged in. Could that have caused the issue? Either the temperature difference between the floor and heating pad, or some electromagnetic charge messing up the e-ink?
