I believe the direction is (can be) set by the user as an option - I'm right handed, with down (left) as forward and up (right) as back. It only has to be slightly diagonal, by a few degrees, for the swipe to work, not necessarily straight across. Too vertical a swipe results in nothing happening (the circle with line through it - "invalid action" - appears instead).
