I don't know if it's true of all extended warranties for the new readers--but it's not only warranties purchased directly from Sony. If you buy a 650 from B&H Photo for example, the extended warranty that they sell also covers "accidental damage from handling". They over both two and three year extended warranties.

Note--both the extended warranty I purchased and the warranty offered by B&H Photo don't cover "normal wear and tear". They cover accidental damage--for example dropping the reader.
