*sigh*, guess I'm in yet another minority. Incidentally, it's been my experience that people are eminently capable of being obnoxious without the help of a cell phone.

The packaging is part of the attraction for some people. I have an HP Mini netbook that I am thrilled with, but while it's smaller than a standard laptop, it can be a pain to carry around at times. So, I can just bring the phone, or I can bring the netbook and WiFi with my phone as the situation warrants. I do find, however, that since trading up from my last Blackberry to a Droid X I bring my netbook with me a lot less often.

Sure; I pay US$29.99 a month for my wife's, US$23.99 for mine (I got a break of some kind being primary account holder) for unlimited. From what I've seen, it goes up from there, especially in EU and Japan.

Form should follow function, unless you're an artist. I'll take a full-QWERTY keyboard like on a Blackberry over texting with a standard phone keypad any day of the week.

I don't see how that would affect the decision whether to buy a smartphone versus a regular phone. You have to plug it in; that's a showstopper?
