"Pocketbook" used to be used in the UK as a substitute for "wallet"; in Dorothy L. Sayers' "Lord Peter Wimsey" stories, for example, Lord Peter is often said to be putting things into his pocketbook for safekeeping. They were written in the 20s and 30s.
