The Kindle 3 will be OBSOLETE in less than one year. Thus, you will never replace the battery.
I bought a Sony PRS 900 last December and its already obsolete.
Kindle 4 to be introduced next year will make 1, 2 and 3 totally useless.
So far I'm spending far more on eReaders than eBooks. LOL. I like new gadgets. I buy dedicated electronic bibles each year as well and the prior year version is also made obsolete. That is the technology way.
Finally, its true one can only do a Restart (reboot) from the Menu on the Settings Screen - not a Shut Down. However, I leave WiFi on all the time and use sleep mode and still got 20 days on my first battery cycle and 31 on my second. I'm using MP3 music now so my third may get less. I read for 2 to 3 hours daily in one or two sessions.
