I have a Kindle 2 GW. In sleep mode it continues to index and sort things so if you have recently added a big number of books it will eat more battery and even your Kindle may got "battery empty" message soon. Putting it off will prevent this but after start it will continue to index and sort. I even have read an advice to keep Kindle connected to the USB or power adapter after adding big amount of content (but after disconnecting it from USB via Safe removal if you had to charge it via USB - it start to index after disconnecting). After adding approx. 850 books at once I had my Kindle 2 (and my friend's Kindle 3 too) discharged in 3-4 hours. Have you noticed similar discharging?
P.S. It means adding files to the 'documents' folder. Using Calibre may have indexing done via the Calibre in the PC. I don't use Calibre.
