HarryT is correct that K3 is not terribly good for reading PDFs because of the size issue. However it may still be good enough for your purposes.

The default way that the Kindle displays pdf is to shrink an entire PDF page to fit on its 6" screen. This makes the print much smaller than the original. Sometimes it is readable that way, sometimes not.

However the Kindle does have the option (available through the AA button) to show the page in landscape mode instead. In this mode it fits the width of the page to the height of the screen, and you turn the Kindle sideways to read. It shows about 45% of the page this way, so you have to click "next page" three times per pdf page as you read, but it does make the print closer to the size it was intended to be. I find this pretty usable (if kind of awkward) for standard (8 1/2 by 11) pdfs. I have not used it on a pdf that was entirely scanned images of text, but I imagine it would work.

I have a K2--the newer K3 is supposed to have better pdf handling options, where "better" means zoom and pan--you still have the "small screen big page" problem but you have more options about how you want to show the big page on the small screen.

So if this sounds like it might work for you, I'd advise getting a Kindle--Amazon lets you return it without charge (I think without charge; you might have to pay shipping but it wouldn't be much) for a month, so you can try it out and see what you think.
