I do put coding pdfs in my reader, and I can only recommend reading them in landscape. I agree with pete_1967 above, this is the currently the only sensible way of doing it at least for me. I attached some pics for you to decide yourself.

second, margin cut, portrait,
third, manually zoom in (I don't need to see the headers and footers) and lock.
fourth, margin cut, landscape.
