It just came out, watch the video, she said that they can't make everything themselves, they have to rely on the major manufacturers (I think there are like only 2 major ones out there) that add additional steps to existing LCD fab. As they explain it, they add another metal layer, and then create a small hole in each pixel to allow light to pass through for the backlight, then reflect light through this opening, which also allows it to reflect light off of the mirror in direct sunlight as well (because of the metal layer).

It's new, look @ the exp of devices, they only have a 10 in display right now but are working on 6 in and others for other portable devices. It's likely you will start seeing this technology in many other devices because it is cheap and easy to manufacture.
