Have you tried just using your thumb knuckle to squeeze it (keeping your thumb straight) rather than trying to bend your thumb over to press (which is what I'm assuming you're doing if your thumb is cramping)? I find that works really nicely and lets you hold it one handed securely and without thumb fatigue.
