My first VanderMeer book was "City of Saints and Madmen". A dense book that took me many weeks to read. Almost gave up a couple of times, but was worth it in the end. Have "Finch" on my TBR pile.

You might try Dradin, In Love, which is the first story in "City of Saints and Madmen".
