As already said a cover is always a good investment. Although they are not cheap i bought the standard sony cover for the 650 without light and i like it.

The lifetime of a rechargeable battery depends on the number of recharge cycle. Each time you connect them to your computer or jack one cycle starts. While batteries have a lifetime of 10.000+ recharges it shouldn't matter much. Connect 3 times/day, 365 days = 10+ years lifetime.
