The Kindle and the Sony Reader use exactly the same screen, yes.
No 6" reader is good for reading PDF books. A PDF file is a "digital representation" of a printed page, and can only be viewed well on a screen that is the same size (or larger) as the size that the PDF is formatted for. Most PDF files are formatted for much larger page sizes than that of a 6" reader. The Kindle DX has a larger screen, of course, and is much better for reading PDFs as a result.
