I've got real mixed feelings about Facebook, but I see I use it about the same way you do. Living half way around the world from where I was born and raised, it has been very handy for getting back in (admittedly superficial) contact with a number of people I hadn't seen or heard from in years.
I don't do any of the games and avoid "liking" anything (for fear of the resulting spam), but it is fun to respond now and then to the postings of friends or share a particularly interesting video clip or photos. I post status updates a couple times a month, usually fairly banal things but just something to let folks know I'm still alive and kicking.
A couple younger family members I'm "friended" with are rather amazing, though, in the things they post. Makes me glad I'm not their parents - and I guess it keeps me somewhat in touch with the crazy stuff "kids" are into back in the US these days.
