I occasionally let my 505 discharge to that level (when I'm reading paper books), so I've had to deal with it a number of times. You don't _have_ to use an A/C adapter to revive it. I think what happens when the charge gets so low that the device can't even boot up is that USB charging reverts to a safe, low current so as not to harm the unknown device. It takes a _long_ time to charge using such a low current. What I do instead is to leave it charge like that for about half an hour, unplug it and let it boot up, and then plug the USB back in at that point. Being alive, the reader can request a higher current and charge at its normal rate.
Indexing takes a lot of power, so if you have a lot of books on the reader, you may have to leave it longer than half and hour the first time.
