It's actually 10 items/page, in one of the Home views, and 9 when viewing a Collection (in landscape it is 7 and 6 respectively). But no matter: you can't modify text size and cannot change the number of items per page. It does seem as though there is a lot of wasted space, even at the text size that is used. It also creates some accessibility issues for people without the visual acuity to read text at that size (a problem shared with the Kindle Store interface, which has no TTS or Voice Guide to make it accessible).

I assume their design goal was to avoid adding unnecessary complexity to the interface, and '10' aligns with our number system well, so it's a reasonable, if arbitrary, choice.
