It almost seems to make more sense to just leave the book on the display and allow the 950 to switch itself to the screensaver -- nothing lost and no wear and tear on the ON/OFF switch.

I usually turn mine off so that the buttons don't get pressed while in the cover, but if that's not a concern I don't see any issue with just letting it time out itself. It does same on wear and tear on the switch as you indicate.
