I have 3 kids 9, 13 and 15
My 13 year old is begging me for a Nook because she reads about one adult novel every week. She has read like that since 4th grade.
My 9 year old has had a Nintendo DS $150.00 since she was 7 and both my older children had older models of this expensive electronic device at age 7. I have a nephew with an iTouch at age 6.
In today’s world of handheld electronics kids grow up with then and if you teach how they must be treated many (NOT ALL) can handle these devices at a very young age. My 9 year old is in 4 th grade and has been asking for cell phone for over a year because many of her friends have one. My older children waited until 6th grade and a few years ago that seemed totally reasonable, even in that short period of time I would guess 30% of her 4th grade class now have cell phones.
This week my youngest turns 10 and she wants an iTouch, she has collected all her birthday money and has enough. I have no concern getting her one, I do realize that I have a duty teach her how to take care of it.
I can totally see kids under the age of 10 using their parents NookColor to read children’s books and play games etc. I know every parent is different I would just hope that most of the posters stating that they do not see parents giving kids these devices actually are parents. I think they are very wrong, I also see the NookColor as more of a shared family device like a wii gaming console.
I forgot to mention my 15 year old son is allergic to books (apparently)
