This is a damaged screen and not a manufacturing or hardware fault. Something hit or pressed hard against the screen around the area where all the lines meet up. A faulty screen wouldn't look like that at all. Get a cover that protects the screen area otherwise you're going to end up breaking your replacement Kindle in a similiar way.
