I didn't find iBooks very intuitive to start with either.

There's an iPod touch user guide which has a section on iBooks:

Apple also has a very basic iBooks FAQ on their website:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4059

There are some walkthroughs on youtube too that might be helpful.
