Last night, as well as reading another short case for Sherlock Holmes (must read this omnibus again and mark some of the spelling mistakes I've been noticing - last night I had "would" instead of "wound", makes a big difference to the context of the sentence), I also read the first chapter of Ulysses.
James Joyce seemed to have a solution about where to put punctuation in relation to quotation/speech marks...in the copy I'm reading he didn't use any (speech marks)....
