It really depends on your use case.
Personally, I really want a tablet reader; not to replace my current device, but to supplement it. The reason is simple: I read comics, and for comics you really want a large size color screen in portrait orientation. I've tried doing it with my laptop but it's not really practical.
I'll still read books on smaller devices, but that's why I want a tablet.
Large screens also help for the game rule PDFs I've bought over the years, but color is less important.
