For what it's worth, B&N's DRM is the easiest and most convenient to deal with of the lot and I'm sure you'll quickly get the hang of it should you decide to try a more DIY route.
They have plenty of free books you could practice on, and if you don't care for their current offerings, you can get 12 free B&N Classics when you download their NookStudy application.
