One has to look at the NOOKcolor in relation to the B & N ebookshop.
They already offer a dedicated e-ink reader. It seems to work fine but does not display color.
Not all people are dedicated readers. A lot of them, and not all of them a children, never read a novel or study an article. They solely read or look at colorful books or glossy magazines.
Ebooks offer the possibility to enhance them with video or other colorful links, useless in e-inkreaders.
So, the NOOKcolor could fill a gap if it works all right and gives easy access to the B & N shop.
