I've had three operations to restore my right eardrum, and the one last year finally took (hallelujah!) except for a small hole which I can live with. For the 12 or 13 years it was blown out, though, I was ridiculously sensitive to noise, to the point that it really kind of shaped my life. I stopped going to loud restaurants or anywhere where there might be a big crowd. It seemed strange to me that I was actually LESS sensitive to loud noises once I had better hearing until I saw the results of my hearing tests, before and after. Before, I had lost the range speech falls in, but retained the range of all that crazy ambient noise. It played weird games with my filtering ability, I guess. Much better now.

I'm not sure what my point started out to be here (brain cramp!), except that sometimes with less hearing you can be actually more sensitive to noise.
