I think it's just that the forums's been flooded with vaguely-veiled intimations to this.
Amazon just don't care, to be honest, I'd think. It's more hassle for them to check this. And really, with book-buying being one of the fantastic draws of this device, with the excellent tie-in to the Amazon store, the Kindle is designed to get people to consume stuff quickly and often.
It appears to be working; I've already bought more books in the first month than I did in the first 4 when I had my Sony eReader.
I have nothing to hide, so I'm happy for Amazon to look at the device. I mean, what are they going to do with my reading habbits? More effectively market things to me? Fine. Find out which books I read, and offer me deals on them? Also fine. Call on my doortstep on my birthday with a cake? Creepy - but fine.
