I do realize that, but the DRM-free thing only came about thanks to Amazon gaining some portion of the market in music.
As far as the AAC format goes, I've seen very little outside of Apple that will accept it, at least on the hardware end. I see a lot of software, but not mp3 players. Perhaps things have changed and I haven't noticed (I am old fashioned and prefer buying CD's and I hate the Itunes store for reasons beyond format and DRM).
