What's the firmware version? If it's 1.4.0, then it can be downgraded to the 1.0.0 firmware and then softrooted (the easy way). Some Nooks with a serial number starting with 1003 have the 1.4.0 firmware, but the ones with 1.4.1 and above cannot be downgraded to the 1.0.0 firmware.
