mldavis2 point about the size of the print area in a paperback is a cogent one --- high-density displays on cell phones make them much more useable for such reading.

Also, the clothing you describe is most commonly found with that size pocket for men, which leaves women in a not-good situation. Even if we want to carry a purse all the time (I'm sure I'm not the only woman around who doesn't always want to have to keep track of the thing), the point was made in another post that a lot of purses just don't have room for something the size of a Kindle or iPad.
If a given article of female clothing
has pockets (an annoying percentage do not), they're very likely to be too small to hold such a device.
