We found the problem - 1.7 tries to use a proxy server if it can find it, and that seems to be very slow. In 1.7.1, which we are releasing late tonight, this will be off by default.

You can press Control-Shift-P while in your library to toggle this feature. Give it a try and see if it gets faster.
