I don't eject unless I'm transferring more than 10mb or flashing firmware. I just pull that sucker out with extreme prejudice. Improper ejecting won't kill your devices, in my experience. Worst case scenario it'll cause errors on transfered files. I agree though, Sony should prevent shutdown when USB is connected.
