Suppose some government dictator decides that books that offend him must be deleted. Can't happen? Neither can unwarranted searches at airports. Amazon won't want to comply, but the screws could be put to them.

Amazon is not the only one with that capability. Any of the e-readers will be able to pull a book that you purchased from them from their archive. B&N can do it with the Nook, Sony can do it with their e-readers.
For some folks this means never buying from the major book stores. For other folks it means saving everything to their hard drive so they always have the books. For others it means breaking the DRM and saving the books on their hard drives.
