It seems that it is not necessary to press the tip of the stylus against the screen.
If the stylus is held parallel to the screen, and over an icon, the icon will not be activated. However, changing the angle towards the vertical, yet without the tip making contact with the screen, activates the icon.
The stylus is sensitive to angle, so if the hand remains in place and the stylus moved with the fingers - as opposed to moving it directly over an icon - the reaction will be variable. This is perhaps what you are seeing, Bokjeid, rather than the effect of dirt on the screen.
