There's a book by Sharyn McCrumb "The Windsor Knot", the one where Elizabeth and Cameron are planning the wedding so she can go meet the Queen, where they start getting postcards signed "Your Garden Gnome" from all over the globe. According to Wikipedia, it's a pretty popular trick (I guess if you have global friends it's a lot easier to pull off?)
Finally they end up with this huge heavy package at the wedding reception containing...yep, the garden gnome!
