Topaz is basically page images with Amazon DRM. If you want to read it on a Kindle, fine. However, if you don't have a Kindle, it's difficult to convert Topaz to another format, such as epub, which can be read on a variety of other ereader devices. It involves both dedrming the file and OCRing the page images. Non-Topaz Amazon files are much easier to convert and read on other devices.
